Your Basic Guide to Properly Dosing with CBD Oil and Flower

Mar 17, 2021

When taking CBD, we naturally try to do everything that we can to ensure that it’s as effective as possible.  We choose the best product from the most trusted brand and take it daily for the best results.  But, if there is one factor that is more important than just about anything else, it is how much we take with each dose.

The reality is that a lot of us are not dosing our CBD properly, whether we are taking it in the form of oil or flower.

The Importance of Proper Dosing

Dosing your CBD correctly can make or break your ability to effectively get the results that you’re looking for.  Many of us think that cannabidiol is the type of thing that we do not need to be too strict with, and so we take however much we feel like taking in the moment.  However, the reality is that when it comes to cannabinoids like CBD, maintaining consistency is important, as is making sure that we’re following the right general dosing guidelines.

Many people who say that CBD “doesn’t work” were simply not being fully conscious of their dosing, or making sure that they were consistent with the amount that they took each day.  Then, there are people who take more cannabidiol than is actually necessary for what they’re trying to achieve, who wonder where their money went.

Remember, there are three things that need to be taken into consideration:

  1. Your body weight.
  2. The condition you’re treating.
  3. Your individual body chemistry.

Dosage vs. Milligram Strength

Before we get into the basic dosing guidelines, first we need to break down the difference between dosage and milligram strength.  Milligram strength refers to how many milligrams of hemp extract are in a formula.  For instance, in CBD oil, hemp extract is not the only ingredient.  There is also a carrier oil that dilutes the CBD, and sometimes flavoring as well.

Therefore, the milligram strength of a CBD oil reflects how many milligrams of actual hemp are in the formula.  As a result, this determines the potency.  You can be taking a milliliter of a CBD oil that has anywhere from 5 to 50 milligrams per dose, which plays a big role in how potent the effects will be.

Note: CBD flower does not come in milligram strengths.  This is because there is no ingredient diluting the compounds, as the only ingredient is the hemp flower itself.  Therefore, dosing with flower is a bit less exact than dosing with CBD oil.

Dosing CBD Oil

Whether you’re using it traditionally as an oral tincture or a food additive, the dosing guidelines are the same.  One dropper’s worth counts as a full dose, because a full dropper holds a milliliter of liquid, and a standard dose is a milliliter.  Again, how potent that dose is depends on the strength of the formula, so bear in mind that the dosage can range dramatically in potency.

Dosing CBD Flower

Dosing with CBD flower is a bit different, because as we said, there is no milligram count or milliliter measurement you’re going for.  Whether you are vaping or smoking CBD flower, the dosing guidelines are simple: 1 to 4 puffs is a standard dose.  Naturally, 1 puff is ideal for beginners who are still unsure as to what to expect with cannabidiol, while 4 puffs is for more experienced users who want a stronger effect.

If you’re using CBD flower to make edibles, dosing guidelines are a bit different.  You will want to first make a CBD butter, which infuses a standard butter with the flower.  Then, use about one tablespoon of that butter per serving, but you can increase the amount if you decide that you want each dose to be more potent.

Dosing Tips

Now that you know the basic rules, let’s share some dosing tips.

Tip #1: You Can Experiment

First, know that the dosing guidelines above are just suggestions.  Generally, it is fine to experiment with higher doses if you feel that this will be more useful to you.  You can certainly increase your dosage over time without any real concern, as hemp is nontoxic to the body.  Try sticking with the same dose for two weeks so that your body fully adjusts to your routine before changing the amount that you take.

Tip #2: You Can Ask Your Doctor

You can always ask your doctor for more personalized dosing suggestions, as he or she knows more about your unique medical history and circumstances.

Tip #3: You Can Take Two Doses in One Day

Yes, it’s perfectly okay to take two doses in a day, spaced apart as needed.  Again, because hemp is nontoxic, taking two doses is not associated with any real concerns.

Final Dosing Thoughts

If you want to maximize the potential that CBD can offer, make sure that you’re taking the right dose of hemp daily.  As you can see, there are suggestions for the proper dose for both CBD oil and CBD flower, and as a beginner, following them can help you know that you’re taking cannabidiol as is recommended by experts.  Over the course of time, you can explore higher doses if you feel that this will help you get more out of your routine.
