When is the Best Time to Take CBD Oil?

Mar 16, 2021

Most of us know by now the importance of trying to make CBD oil part of a daily routine rather than taking it sporadically, as we now know that cannabinoids can accumulate in the body in a way that makes them more useful when consumed consistently.  Most of us have a daily CBD routine already, where we take the same dosage at a certain time of day in order to experience its properties in the most effective manner possible.  Hence, you may be surprised to learn that the time of day you take it can determine how you feel while it’s active in your system.

Does It Matter?

First, let’s talk about why timing matters.  When taken sublingually, as CBD oil usually is, it absorbs into the body within about 15 or so minutes and lasts for about 4 hours.  During that window is when you will feel the effects of cannabidiol and other hemp compounds at work in your body.

While the endocannabinoid system appreciates and utilizes cannabinoids no matter what time of day you take them, the timing can be important if you’re trying to achieve something specific during the day with CBD, such as help with sleep, or a boost during your morning routine.

Taking CBD Oil in the Morning

First, let’s discuss taking CBD oil in the morning.  Many people are surprised to learn that you can take it in the morning, because they associate cannabidiol with sleepiness.  But, research is starting to indicate otherwise.  As it turns out, studies show that CBD may act as a wake-promoting agent that regulates energy levels that we rely on to get through the day ahead.  This means that no matter what time of day you take CBD, you may find that it supports the body’s natural energy cycle that peaks and dips at certain times of day.

Taking CBD Oil in the Afternoon

That afternoon slump is something that many of us are familiar with, and the same reason for taking CBD oil in the morning may be useful in the afternoon if you are in need of a gentle boost.  Furthermore, consuming your dose in the afternoon can ensure that the second half of your workday goes smoothly as the feelings of bliss that hemp can provide will be in full effect.

Taking CBD oil in the afternoon shouldn’t result in feeling sleepy unless you take a particularly high dose.  Remember, everyone is different.  Therefore, you should first try taking it in the afternoon on a day off, when you do not have any responsibilities that could be disrupted should you feel groggy after taking your dose.

Taking CBD Oil After Work

Once we are done with work, most of us just want to unwind and relax.  Work can be stressful, and it is important to have a couple of hours during which we can chill out, gather our thoughts and recover from the labor that we’ve just done.

If you have a hard time winding down after a particularly stressful day at the office, CBD oil may be worth taking once you’re back in the comfort of your home.  Studies have pointed to stress-regulating properties that come from the role that cannabinoid receptors in the brain play in maintaining balanced neurotransmitter activity

In other words, CBD could be nice and soothing in a way that makes you feel like you’re unwinding no matter how much stress you’ve dealt with just hours ago.

Taking CBD Oil at Bedtime

Many people take CBD oil at bedtime because they are looking for something gentle to take before drifting off to sleep.  CBD’s soothing properties may be particularly helpful at night when stressful thoughts can keep us tossing and turning.  Taking a single dose about a half hour before bedtime may help you get into the right state of mind to doze off easily.

If you choose to take cannabidiol at bedtime, make sure that you take at least a full dose so that the effects last for a few hours into your sleep.  This can help maximize the potential calming properties so that you can stay in a restful state during a good portion of the night.  Overall, many people find that they wake up feeling refreshed after taking a dose of cannabidiol the night before, because by the time they awaken, the effects have worn off.

When Taking CBD, Make Sure You Have That Timing Down Pat

CBD oil is a highly versatile product that can accomplish all kinds of things via its unique properties, thanks to the nature of cannabinoids in relation to the body’s endocannabinoid system.  As you can see, the time of day you take your dose of CBD oil can have a lot to do with the effects that you experience, so consider paying more attention to when you take your daily dose if you’re trying to accomplish a specific goal with cannabidiol.
